MSA(Mine Safety Appliance) Ultra-Lite SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus), Open-Circuit, Positive Pressure SCBA, requires a supply of compressed air. The user simply inhales and exhales. The exhaled air is exhausted from the system(open-circuit). The compressed air must meet the requirements of "Grade D Air". It must contain between 19.5 - 23.5% Oxygen, with the balance being predominately nitrogen, and contain less than 24ppm of water vapor.
Repairs and maintenance are performed at Station 17 by trained technicians. Firefighters are not to perform any repairs on the SCBA’s, "If it requires a tool to fix it, it must be done by certified technicians."
At the start of each shift, and after each use each SCBA must be inspected to assure that it is ready for service.
