EXTINGUISHER RATINGS

The rating system for fire extinguishers is based on tests conducted by Underwriters Laboratory, Inc. and Underwriters Laboratory, Canada. The tests determine the extinguishing potential for each size and type of extinguisher. The rating system consists of both numbers and letters. Class "A" and Class "B" extinguishers receive both letter and numerical designations, while Class "C" and Class "D" receive only a letter designation.

Class "A" extinguishers are rated from 1A to 40A, depending on their size. For a 1A rating the extinguisher contains 1 1/4 gallons of water, and 2A contains 2 1/2 gallons of water. For a dry chemical extinguisher to receive a 10A rating, it must be able to extinguish the same amount of fire as a water extinguisher that contains 12 1/2 gallons of water. Class "A" fires are fires involving ordinary combustibles materials such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber and many plastics.

Class "B" extinguishers are rated from 1B to 640B. The test used by UL uses the burning flammable liquid n-Heptane in square steel pans. The rating is based on the number of square feet that a non-expert user can extinguish. The UL uses a expert operator during the tests, and it is determined that the area that a non-expert can extinguish is 40% of what an expert can extinguish. Class B fires involve flammable and combustible liquids and gases such as gasoline, oil, lacquers, paints, mineral spirits, and alcohol’s.

Class "C" extinguishers are not given a numerical rating because they are essentially Class "A" or "B" extinguishers that contain a non-conductive extinguishing agent. Class "C" fires are any fires involving live electrical equipment.

Class "D" extinguishers are not given a numerical rating because the details of instruction are included on the face piece of the extinguisher when it is determined to be safe and effective for use on metal fires. Class "D" fires involve combustible metals.
